A summary of my Loki fic recs
Thor fandom overview
I'll be yours by sarkywoman (R, 9,884 words)
Reasons: This is a relationship study of Thor and Loki's relationship, across a large stretch of time, and it's heavy on the melodramatic angst in a way that really works, that really pulls you in and draws those characters and put them in an epic landscape. It is a descent in madness and chaos that is heartwrenching and awesome at the same time.
Shatter by Aria (Explicit, Thor/Loki, Jane Foster, Darcy Lewis, Erik Selvag, 32,209 words)
Reasons: The premise is simple : what if Loki had been the one to get banished on Midgard without his power? The execution is breathtaking. The writing, characterisation and storytelling are superb, and frequently heartbreaking.
Red Ruin, and the Breaking Up of Laws by hummingbirdmoth (M, Loki/Thor, Frigga, Sif, Odin, Heimdall, Warriors Three, 17,737 words)
Reasons: This is an absolutely brilliant fic and a must read. It has a wonderful chaotic energy, and devious humour that flows seamless with darker aspects, malice, manipulations and beauty. One of the best portrayal of Loki, ever, and of his complicated relationship with Thor.
Crimson by nonny (Explicit, Thor/Loki, 1,914 words)
Reasons: This is mostly a PWP piece between Thor and Loki in his female body, and one with a raunchy sort of humour, but also with an interesting mood and characterisation! bickering complicty between siblings that lends it a sort of bitter-sweet contentment that has little to do with hopefulness and much with weariness. Also it's hot. And it's frequent for Thor to be dumbed down in fanfics it's a relief when he isn't so much.
The Shapeshifter by hummingbirdmoth (T, Loki/Thor, Loki/Doom, Loki/Osborn, Loki/Balder, 1,692 words)
Reasons: Loki in all his seductive, perverse, manipulative, and contrarian glory, and the way he plays with four men, with a specific purpose in mind. It is beautifully written and slyly crafted, quite kinky in a very fucked up way. And the mindfuckery of the premise is deliciously rendered.
The Merry Jest by ladyk_d_azrael (NC-17, Loki/Balder, Thor, Warriors Three, Sif, Odin, Frigga, 7,692 words)
Reasons: Loki plays a prank by disguising himself as Nana - Balder's soon to be wife - on the day of their wedding. Then the prank turn against himself when everyone refuses to consider the marriage ceremony invalid. The story is delightful, it is both funny and works great in term of characterisation, really managing to sell pairing (as a frequently uneasy one, but nonetheless, Loki is insufferable, Balder is long suffering, they have hot sex.). There is a sequel, Jests Told in Earnest, which is just as delightful.
You shall know me by calling_alice (R, Balder/Loki, background Karnilla/Balder, Skurge/Amora, Heimdall, 3,710 words)
Reasons: Set in the middle of Simonson's run, this is a lovely, rather bittersweet fanfics that explores the characters and their interaction in a subtle way, full of deft touches and clever dialogues.
A Wise Child That Knows Its Own Mother by ladyk_d_azrael (NC-17, Balder/Loki, Vali, 3,600 words)
Reasons: Loki birthes Balder's child while in female forms, and then refuses to name the child, and generally speaking acts oddly toward him. This is a wonderfully horrific, clever and bitter-sweet all at the same time story, with a sort of cruel fairy tale logic.
Sigyn (binding is not punishment) by Aria (T, Darcy/Loki, Jane Foster, Thor, 4,521 words)
Reasons: This story finds the perfect place between whimsical and terrifying, in a way that is hauntingly bitter-sweet. Darcy's voice is delightful and her characterisation wonderful. There is a sequel, which is even more terrifyingly whimsical.
Paper Planes & Playground Games by Memlu (G, Loki/Sif, Thor, Frigga, 14,438 words)
Reasons: A delightful portrayal of Sif as a young girl growing up in Asgard and how she relates to both Thor and Loki. It is very charming and lovely.
Rare maleslash pairings
Only Smile When I Lie by soda_and_capes (T, Loki/Doom, 14,769 words)
Reasons: This is a fabulous piece of characterisation in term of drawing the complicated and often tumultuous romance between two supervillains, one being asexual, the other genderqueer, one a god, the other mortal; and lots of plotting, megalomania, quest for revenge against their respective nemesis, and so on.
Ouroubouros by soda_and_capes (R, Heimdall/Loki, mentions of other pairings, 2,996 words)
Reasons: This is told from Heimdall's PoV, who watched everything, in a gorgeous, poetic and vivid language, that incorporates a lot of mythological references as well as references to the notion of cyclical time that always ends in Ragnarok (from Marvel comics) and uses it a a fascinating, stunning and mind blowing story.
Halo by paxlux (M, Loki/Ironman, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Phil Coulson, Nick Fury, Bruce Banner, Pepper Potts, Captain America, Jarvis, 35,912 words)
Reasons: An Avengers fic in which Loki reconciles with Thor (or pretends to) and starts hanging out with the Avengers, to Tony Stark's horror and paranoia. It is excellently written and characterised, and quite amusing in a wry way.
A Small Thing Worn Thin by Memlu (G, Loki, Thor, Frigga, Odin, 10,299 words)
Reasons: This is a story taking place when both Thor and Loki are children and they go on an adventure. Not everything go as expected but it is adorable - with wonderful interplay between the brothers - cleverly plotted, and with heartbreaking hints of things to come.
Kill All The Pretty Lies by demonqueen666 (Pg-13, Darcy & Loki, Jane, Erik, Odin, Selene, original characters including ones based on Norse mythology, eventual appearances by Thor, Heimdall, Coulson, Sif and the Warriors Three, 84,456 words)
Reasons: This is a long, plotty fic with a very solid and interesting story, which also allow the characters to shine in great ways. It is a bit slow to start, but once the story is truly going, it's quite riveting, with some great action and horror scenes. The scene is an archaeological dig on which Darcy has been working at with friends, and they start digging some old, dangerous secrets that are related to Asgard, and then Loki ends up in the middle of it - amnesiac and in a female form for the majority of the tale - for his own reason. It's a Gen fic, but I dare say there is some Loki/Darcy (femslashy, lol) subtext. There are two sequels, which are very different in mood and focus but are also very good.
Gifts by SkiesOverGideon (K+, Loki, Frigga, assorted Asgardians, 3,631 words)
Reasons: This is wonderful Trickster story, in both the good and bad sides of this, and it shows a side of Loki that seldom gets explored in fanfics, more faithful to the mythological version, and it shows Frigga being quietly badass, which is always awesome.
we may be better strangers by fahye (PG, Freyja, Loki, various Asgardians, implied Freyr/Loki, squint Thor/Loki, 4,933 words)
Reasons: This is very much a fic that takes a few things from the movie, and a few more things from Norse mythology, and then use it for the sake of its own story, and developing some OCs - and is all the more successful for it. While Freyja is, at most, a barely existent character in comics continuity, the way she, and her brother Freyr, are used and realised to give a fresh, outsider's point of view on Asgard in general, and on Loki in particular is quite brilliant and interesting.
Old Hope by soda_and_capes (T, Loki, Balder, Thor, Tyr, Odin, Freyja, Heimdall, Amora, Doom, Namor, implied Loki/Thor, Loki/Balder, Loki/Doom, 8,046 words)
Reasons: This is a portrayal of Loki growing up, as he relates with the various people, always feeling at odd and different. It is wonderfully nuanced and heartbreaking. It tackles on Jotun-as-Genderqueer especially, and on gender in general, in a way that is brilliant.
What Once Was Lost Returned by demonqueen666 (T, Loki, Thor, Sif, Laufey, Helblindi, Býleistr, Angrboða, Frigga, Odin, Warriors Three, Thrym, Heimdall; Loki/Angerboda, 74,057 words)
Reasons: This story explores what if, during the attack in Jotunheim, the Frost Giants had also realised Loki was one of them, and brought him back to Laufey as a rescued Prince, once stolen away by the Aesir. And so, what if Loki had to come to term with his heritage right there, in direct confrontation with the people he considers monsters. The result is a long character driven plotty fic that develops all the Jotun characters and their culture in a marvellous way. What especially makes it work, I think, is that it isn't particularly forgiving with any one, be it the Aesir or the Jotun, Laufey or Odin, or Loki for that matter. Everyone has some pretty blatant flaws that are not glossed over. It deals with the culture clashes and mutual misunderstandings in ways that are very interesting, and allow Loki to grow in way he often cannot in other configurations.
Never leave the past behind by kaiser-chan (G, Kid Loki & Ikol)
Reasons: It is pretty art of Kid Loki looking wonderfully mischievous. :p
