Thoughts of Kings Rising

1- I kind of think it is a mistake to include Laurent PoV chapters, structurally speaking, since it's only two chapters and it doesn't really add any important plot information we don't get latter (I think?); besides the fanservice of getting Laurent PoV. Then again, the whole series is pretty much fanservice, so... heh

2- I guess the Erasmus backstory ended up foreshadowing Jokaste... huh (deliberate or just Cat liking those tropes? Or both?)

3- VINDICATION #Laurent knew

4- See that's how you do a sexy marriage ceremony (what do you mean alliances between kinds do not count?) I think this is now my favourite ceremony of marriage besides the Patryn rituals.

5- There were a few points where I thought the plot was descending into ridiculousness. On the other hand it was always delightful so... heh :D

6- wow I did turned up in thanked commenters at the end!! That's pretty nice since as far as I remember my only comment on livejournal was a little side discussion about the name "Nicaise" and whether it sounded like "Salade Niçoise" o_o

7- we never found out the Regent's name, did we? XD

I liked having Laurent's POV, though, yeah, I don't think it necessarily adds a ton. But I think it was the right decision, but felt arbitrarily sprinkled in. Even if she didn't want to balance the POVs, having, say, Laurent's POV kick off each part of the book or something would've worked better, so it would feel like a plan rather than a Damen POV limitation/afterthought.

That really jumped out at me! Upon reflection, maybe "likes the trope" more than foreshadowing, because it's kind of same-y if it's deliberate foreshadowing. But I like this trope, too, so I enjoyed it here, and enjoyed noticing the echo.

I started going through the LJ names in the acknowledgements, but my eyes glazed over after a while. I'm gonna go find you there, though!

And no, I don't think the Regent ever gets a name.

I like having Laurent's PoV too! Definitely good fanservice as far as I'm concerned!! But yeah i don't think it's... elegant to just randomly write shifts of PoV like that in a story that didn't have them yet XD

I like the trope too but i think i liked it more with Erasmus' story than with Jokaste. Probably because she's one of the very few female characters, so having her have an agency of her own, a real ambition traded off to doing it for the love of Damien didn't really feel like much of improvement sexism wise.

that kind of cracks me up :)

Definitely not elegant! That's a good word for what's off with it, actually.

I also liked it more with Erasmus's story than Jokaste's because the loyalties of the other slave (whose name I'm blanking on) were so clear, and he was acting in the only way that was open to him to protect the person he loved, against the artificial/inculcated loyalty to a master (and masters in general).

I don't think it undermines Jokaste's ambition entirely -- although, admittedly, it's not very clear how much of the manipulation of Kastor was Jokaste and how much the Regent. I didn't read it as Jokaste being *just* motivated by love of Damen -- I think she had ambition, too, and saw Kastor as the path to that ambition, and then was hoping, IDK, that Damen would survive and she could off Kastor and bring Damen back and have him on her own terms? It's kind of muddled, or maybe I just need a reread, knowing that shipping him off to Vere was her idea...

I wanted more Laurent POV! I can understand that it would be difficult to write, but that little taste was fascinating.

#3 Ha! I always thought so.

I could deal with books of Laurent PoV to be honest! XD

I'm hoping the promised epilogue story will be in Laurent's POV. Aside from wanting more sexytimes I think we need a lot more information on how allying the two kingdoms is going to work - from what we've seen there's going to be a lot of resistance from the populations - and Laurent's perspective during political intrigues would be more interesting than Damen's usual missing the subtext view.
